Paris for a Minute

It takes me about the same time to get to Paris from London, as it takes from NYC to New Haven, CT. Or even to New Jersey during rush hour. You board the train at King’s Cross, and 2 hours later you find yourself in awe at the Gare du Nord station in Paris.

Having lived in the US for the last 5 years, I had completely forgotten how smooth traveling can be. In just a couple of hours, you’re taken to a whole new culture, with a different climate, language, cuisine and lifestyle. Just a day after my short and sweet trip home, I found myself on the Eurostar to work on a shoot in Paris – and I was in awe of the fact that I managed to take a day trip to Paris. It was the kind of life I had dreamed of as a kid.

I arrived in Paris at a little past 10AM, and as I walked out from Gare du Nord, I immediately felt at home. This was only my second time going to Paris, where my first was a quick pass-through in a bus during a school trip to Normandy. Do you know that warm feeling you get when you’re walking through the streets of NYC, especially in Midtown, post nightfall listening to jazz? This was even warmer. It was indeed tremendously hot outside this day, but this is a special feeling. You’ll know immediately when you feel it. If you don’t know what I’m talking about – time for a vacation or an all together new location.

After the shoot, I met up with one of my closest friends from high school. Last time I saw her was in New York, and she had just moved to Paris a day before the shoot. In high school we used to joke about how we would just suddenly meet in all the major cities of the world, we’d be traveling for work and call just each other and meet for dinner in a new country every time. After the shoot, we suddenly ended up meeting for dinner, and walked through several gorgeous areas before ending up on a staircase at the Louvre. We made fun of the tourists and took the time to laugh, because our wildest dreams we had short of a decade ago weren’t big enough.

And yes of course I had to bring a baguette with me back to London… Ridiculous? Always.
